Trump Ordered to Pay $100 Million After Supreme Court Appeal Fails in E. Jean Carroll Case

Donald Trump’s years-long effort to overturn E. Jean Carroll’s landmark civil victory has come to an end.
The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear Trump’s appeal, leaving intact the jury’s finding that he sexually abused and defamed journalist and author E. Jean Carroll. As a result, the $5 million judgment in that case stands.
But that’s only part of the story.
Carroll first sued Trump in 2019 for defamation after he accused her of fabricating her sexual assault allegation. She later filed a second lawsuit in 2022 under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily allowed survivors of sexual abuse to pursue civil claims for incidents that had occurred years earlier.
That second case went to trial first. A jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in a New York department store in the mid-1990s and for defaming her, awarding her $5 million in damages.
The 2019 defamation case was heard afterward and resulted in an additional $83 million judgment. With interest, Trump now owes more than $100 million to Carroll across the two cases.
Trump has consistently denied Carroll’s allegations and argued the trials were unfair. However, every major appeal has failed, including before the federal appeals court and now the U.S. Supreme Court.
Years of appeals couldn’t erase the verdict. Accountability prevailed.
