Daizy Gedeon: I feel that the Lebanese armed forces have been set up to fail because they don’t have the equipment and the money. If there is so much pressure and expectation on the Lebanese army to deliver. How can it be expected to do that when it is very weak, it’s undersourced, under equipped, undermanned. America has prevented the Lebanese army from gaining strength. It’s been its greatest donor, twenty billion dollars or so over the last twenty five years or so, and it trains the army. But how does it fulfil its obligations even under this agreement if it is weak?
Matt: So first of all, it’s a little bit of a contradiction to say that the United States is holding back the LAF while we are its largest donor.
Daizy Gedeon: It’s limiting.
Matt: I don’t accept that. I disagree with the description that the LAF is weak or incapable. The LAF actually is very well trained. It’s not the case that the LAF doesn’t have equipment. They have equipment, they have some old equipment, especially larger things that are not really what’s necessary to maintain control. The parts is easy, the salary should be easy. Beyond that, we’re talking about ammunition, even more so. LAF’s inability to provide full salaries to its soldiers is really, really not good. Hezbollah is able, even today, under financial pressure, to pay three times as much what a full LAF salary is, and LAF soldiers are typically getting half their salary.
Daizy Gedeon: Yeah.
Matt: And this is a rounding error for the Western countries.
