In a basement in Kabul, 21 girls — aged 14 to 16 — gather in secret to learn what the Taliban has decided they’re not allowed to know. They dress as plainly as possible. They carry sewing fabric in their bags, so if the morality police stop them, they can say they’re just headed to a sewing lesson instead of risking arrest for the crime of studying calculus.
Before the CBS crew left, the girls handed them 21 handwritten letters. Not written for a grade. Written for the world.
These girls can’t speak freely to the world themselves. They trusted strangers with a camera to carry their voices past that basement door. The least we can do is listen.
