THE “JEWISH TALIBAN”: THE SECRET SECT ACCUSED OF FORCED PREGNANCIES, CHILD SEX ABUSE AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING
The group is called Lev Tahor, “Pure Heart” in Hebrew. The press nicknamed it the “Jewish Taliban,” because women and girls, some as young as three, are made to cover from head to toe in black robes. It was founded in Jerusalem in 1988, and it has run from country to country ever since: Canada, the US, Mexico, Guatemala, and more.
In December 2024, Guatemalan police raided its compound and took 160 children and about 40 women into protective custody. Prosecutors cited forced marriage, abuse and human trafficking. The attorney general’s office said a complaint had been filed over possible forced pregnancies, mistreatment of minors and rape, and that suspected bones of a child were found.
In the US, two senior leaders, Nachman Helbrans and Mayer Rosner, were convicted of kidnapping and child sexual exploitation after plotting to snatch a 14-year-old girl back to the man she’d been forced to marry. They each got 12 years.
The group says it’s the victim of religious persecution. Prosecutors say the victims are the children.
Lev Tahor does not speak for Jews or Judaism. The Jewish community of Guatemala publicly disowned the sect and backed the investigation, and rabbis elsewhere have done the same. This is a fringe cult, and the people it hurt most are its own children.
