Lebanese Prisoner Released After 33 Years: A Story of Freedom
December 12, 2024A Lebanese man imprisoned by Syria’s government 33 years ago was reunited with his family yesterday after the country’s rebel forces freed scores of political prisoners during their recent toppling of the Assad government this week.
Suheil Hamawi is just one of many former prisoners whose fate was unknown to his family for decades, while many more anxiously wait to see whether their loved ones are among those released.
According to rights groups, several prisoners remain trapped in cells several storeys underground for which rebel forces lack the technology to access.
