NATIONS REJECT ISRAEL’S TWISTED LOGIC

This Week at the ICJ – Part 1

Highlights from the submissions of various nations at the International Court of Justice hearing on Palestine and the right for self-determination.

The 17-judge panel of the ICJ this week heard testimony from at least 30 nations advocating for Palestines’ right to total sovereignty. Whilst Israel argues, and has argued for decades, that the world cannot declare Palestine an independent state without the permission of Israel, it seems the world has awoken to how unjust this stipulation is and is ready to take action – WITHOUT ISRAEL’S APPROVAL.

Three submissions that argued for Palestinian statehood were Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the advocate for Palestine, Prof Philippe Sands KC. These were their key argumenst:

EGYPT, represted by Yasmine Moussa, Legal Advisor at the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, presented Egypt’s oral arguments stating that:
“”Israel is deliberately and wantonly creating conditions of life that are that are intended to make life in Gaza impossible…all while the Security Council repeatedly fails to call for a cease fire and callous disregard for Palestinian life.””

SAUDI ARABIA, represented by Ziad Al-Atiyah, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the Netherlands told the court: “”Israel defends this obscene brutality as the necessary price for defeating Hamas. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia firmly rejects this twisted logic.””

PALESTINE’S advocate at the ICJ, Palestine’s lawyer Prof Philippe Sands King’s Council, delivered the delivered the slam dunk, touchdown so far: “”The occupier does not and cannot have a right of veto over the self-determination of the Palestinian people…The right to self determination requires that UN member states bring Israel’s occupation to an end. NO AID, NO MONEY, NO ARMS, NO COMPLICITY. NOTHING. PERIOD!””

Couldn’t have said it better myself! 🇵🇸

English Script:
Yasmine Moussa: Mr. President, as we speak, Israel’s brutal onslaught continues to rage in occupied Gaza, where 29,000 innocent civilians have been killed and almost 2.3 million people forcibly transferred and displaced in violation of international law. Israel is deliberately and wantonly creating conditions of life that are intended to make life in Gaza impossible. Imposing siege and starvation, including by impeding humanitarian access and the distribution of relief all while the Security Council repeatedly fails to call for a cease fire and callous disregard for Palestinian life.

Ziad Al Atiyah: Israel defends this obscene brutality as the necessary price for defeating Hamas. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia firmly rejects this twisted logic. Israel’s actions and laying waste to the Gaza Strip, killing and maiming tens of thousands of innocent civilians, depriving them of food, water and the basic means of survival while displacing virtually the entire population of the 2.3 million people are not justified under any circumstances.

Philippe Sands: Palestinian statehood is not dependent on the approval of Israel. An occupying power does not have and cannot have a right of veto over the right of self-determination of the Palestinian people. The inalienable rights of the Palestinian people include the right of self-determination, national independence and sovereignty. The right of self-determination requires that UN Member States bring Israel’s occupation to an immediate end. No aid, no assistance, no complicity, no contribution to forcible actions, no money, no arms, no trade, no nothing. All U.N. members are obliged by law to end Israel’s presence on the territory of Palestine. Period.
