18 YEARS AFTER ASSASSINATION HIS SPIRIT LIVES ON – GEBRAN TUEINI
December 12, 2023GEBRAN TUEINI was, in my opinion, Lebaon’s greatest independent journalist. I used to follow him as a young journalist in Australia and had great admiration and respect for his noble dedication to his beloved Lebanon. I learnt much from him and his tremendous courage to always speak the TRUTH even is his life was at risk. We have not seen a journalist like him since nor have we seen a media institution like An Nahar, his newspaper, in Lebanon that truly represents the values of ALL the Lebanese people since his assassination on December 12, 2005.
Today, I take this moment to pause, remember and pay tribute to a true LEBANESE HERO and I dedicate myself to trying to continue, in whatever small way I can, through my writings, reports and documentaries, the education, illumination and empowerment of the Lebanse people across Lebanon and the globe, that he and others like him, including Samir Kassir, another journalist murdered by Syria earlier that year on June 5, 2005, worked tirelessly to achieve.
May his spirit and that of the other fallen martyrs who used the noble art of the pen rather than the sword, guide us to work more diligently to recover our beloved homeland from the grips of greed, corruption, deception and terror.
Dear Gebran, long may your memory live in our hearts and spur us to continue in your footsteps until we fulfil your dream.

English Script:
Gebran Tueini: Congratulations on the independence of Lebanon, because you are the ones who created Lebanon’s independence. You freed Lebanon, not us. You told everyone that you are one unified people, who will not be divided. There will no longer be a civil war in Lebanon.
Nayla Tueini: I cannot forget on the 14th of March 2005, when he he said his oath, the oath that he wanted the Lebanese Christians and Muslims to be united forever defending Lebanon. How he was looking at the people from all over the country coming here to the Martyrs Square and asking for the freedom of Lebanon. He was a journalist and a real journalist.
Gebran Tueini: I hope you repeat after me and recite a new oath, we swear to God Almighty, Muslims and Christians, to be forever united to defend Lebanon. May God bless you and bless Lebanon.
