GENOCIDE NOT A “DISPROPORTIONATE RESPONSE” IT’S A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY
January 22, 2024
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Former Deputy of the French National Assembly, addresses the room, clarifying misconceptions about his stance. He asserts, unequivocally, that he holds no sympathy for the defenseless lives lost on October 7th. However, he vehemently rejects the notion that one crime justifies a response ten times more egregious—massacring thousands, bombing hospitals and schools, and orchestrating the ruthless killing of countless innocents.
Mélenchon emphasizes a crucial principle: one crime should never be used to rationalize another. Particularly when discussing genocide, he resolutely declares that no situation or crime can ever justify such a heinous act against humanity.
Genocide, is a CRIME against humanity, no ifs, ands, or buts.

English Script:
Jean-Luc Mélenchon: Contrary to what has been said, and I’m not the only one in this room, I have no affection for the fact that people were murdered in defence on October 7th. None whatsoever. But on the other hand, I’m not saying that one crime gives you the right to commit a crime ten times bigger, which consists of massacring thousands of defenceless people, bombing hospitals and schools, mass killing people, telling them to go to a place, and regrouping them so you can start murdering them again. One crime does not justify another crime, and particularly since we’re going to talk about genocide, there is no situation, no crime in any situation that justifies genocide. Genocide is not a disproportionate response, it’s a crime against humanity, period.
