THE DEMOCRATIC PROJECT IS IN DANGER.
January 22, 2024Connecting the dots on democracy and global challenges: As the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, declares the democratic project in danger, the urgency intensifies. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, over the weekend, Petro pointed to the ongoing genocide case against #Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as the ultimate test for the legitimacy of international law.
Interestingly, Petro draws parallels to the French Revolution’s ideals of ‘freedom, equality, fraternity,’ which, in his view, have now found resonance in South Africa.
Petro states: “”Think about it – this isn’t just about big words. It directly relates to what’s happening in Palestine. Democracy and fairness aren’t just for one place. They’re for everyone.
How do we make sure democracy stays strong while dealing with big problems like this one?””

Gustavo Petro: Undoubtedly, the democratic project is in danger. Imminent. That’s why we have to restore it, the power of international law. It is a civilisation conquest. And today it has practically fallen to pieces. The slogan freedom, equality, fraternity that created the French Revolution must be restored. It is no longer based in Paris, it is based in South Africa. And that is the new reality.
