“The next 15 months mean that the Israelis will continue to be in Gaza, continue to commit their crimes against the people there, and so much depends on the international reaction, especially the Western reaction, that have the ability to stop it, well, so far have not done enough to do this. So maybe it’s up to the Arab world, the Muslim world, the Global South to do something, because the next 15 months, as far as Israel is concerned, is very much of the same and much worse”

Ilan Pappe: It’s difficult to know exactly what Israel is going to do because there are two opinions within the Israeli policymaker, one led by the Zionist religious groups that want to settle Jews in Gaza, expel as many Palestinians from Gaza as possible, and to prevent actually Gaza from retaining its Palestinian character. There is more pragmatic group that is represented by ministers such as Gantz, maybe even the Minister of Defense Galant, who want to annex a small part of Gaza to Israel, expel some of the Palestinians over to the buffer zone that it seems Egypt is willing to build and they believe they can destroy the Hamas military capacity and bring in either a different Palestinian government from the outside or build a local one, which isn’t Hamas. What is important to say is three things. One, none of these programs is going to work because the Hamas will continue to struggle. Secondly, we don’t know how Palestinians in the West Bank, inside Israel or Hezbollah would react to this ongoing military operation. And thirdly, I don’t believe Egypt would be willing to receive a huge number of refugees for a long time. So unfortunately, because this is not going to work, the next 15 months mean that the Israelis will continue to be in Gaza, continue to commit the crimes against the people there. And so much depends on the international reaction, especially the Western region, that have the ability to stop it. Well, so far have not done enough to do this. So maybe it’s up to the Arab world, the Muslim world, the global south, to do something, because the next 15 months, as far as Israel is concerned, is very much of the same and much worse.
