ISRAEL UNLEASHES ROBOT DOGS IN GAZA
March 22, 2024The Israeli army has released robot dogs in Gaza in an attempt to minimise their soldiers and dog casualties. Despite this not being the first time, the sophistication of the technology has increased substantially.
An article written by Haaretz states that according to the Ghost Robotics website, the robot dog is equipped with sensors and a system that enables it to operate in an unknown environment and recover and get up after falling or slipping. It can walk for up to a distance of 10 kilometres at a speed of three meters per second and can work for up to three hours. If necessary, the Rooster robot, installed on the Vision 60’s back, comes into use.
The Gazan invasion is a battle between a resistance force with improvised weaponry and an army that can afford robot dogs worth $165000 each.
Yet, the resistance persists.

Voice over: Did you know that Israel has been using Gaza as a testing ground for robot dogs? These highly mobile, agile and semi-automatic robotic dogs are worth $165,000 each. They have multiple sensors that help them recognize objects and people in low light or at night. Laser radar, which allows 3D mapping of their surroundings. They operate below and above rubble, can walk through deep puddles, over sand, over bricks, and even float. According to Ghost Robotics, the robot dog’s purpose is to keep workers, warfighters and K9s out of harm’s way. But what about the robotic dog’s target? Does it keep them out of harm’s way? This all sounds a little bit like an episode of Black Mirror, right? Season 4 Episode 5, to be precise. The show Black Mirror taps into the unease of the modern world and how we are slowly moving towards a dystopian way of living. This episode follows a woman who is trying to escape a murderous robotic dog after the unexplained collapse of human society. These dogs are virtually indestructible, completely automatic, self charging shoot trackers into the body of their target so they can never lose them and are extremely intelligent. Now the robotic dogs being used by the IDF are not as advanced as the one in the show and don’t seem to be weaponized. But there is still so much uncertainty around this type of warfare. This is not the first time the IDF has used AI and automated targeting systems to assist their surveillance in the Gaza Strip. This type of digital dehumanization reduces people to data points based on characteristics like gender and ethnicity. For the IDF maintains that the use of these AI systems and robotics is to combat Hamas specifically in underground tunnels to keep casualties at a minimum on both sides. Stop Killer Robots, a coalition that works to ensure human control in the use of force, said: “The use of robots equipped with sensors and automated systems by states raises significant concerns over the increasing level of digital dehumanization in conflict and the lack of regulation, despite the growing use of these technologies. Uncertainties around the capabilities of robots used by militaries, the extent of their autonomous functions and their potential weaponization, further highlights why new international law on autonomy in weapons systems is urgently needed. But what do you think? Will this bring more security to IDF soldiers or further dehumanize Palestinians?
