“The American Muslim community said very early on that it would be completely unacceptable for us to break bread with the very same White House that is enabling the Israeli government to starve and slaughter the Palestinian people in Gaza,” Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said.
The cancelled iftar underscores Biden’s struggle to stem growing anger in US Arab and Muslim communities over his unconditional support for Israel.
“These photo-ops that they’re doing — these discussions that they’re doing to somehow show they still have the Muslim community’s support — are just pathetic attempts to make themselves look good at a time where their true colours have been seen,” Mohamad Habehh, the director of development at American Muslims for Palestine, stated.
The White House betrayed the Muslims.

Robert Mccaw: Tonight, the White House was originally going to host an Iftar, but Muslim community leadership refused to attend. They’re now having a small, scaled down version with their staff. Instead CAIR and other organizations came here tonight to host a “People’s iftar”.
Medea Benjamin: We’re in solidarity with the Muslim community, with the people in Gaza, with the rage that we are all feeling towards this White House.
Protesters: genocide Joe, you’re a liar! We demand a ceasefire.
Robert Mccaw: I’m really proud of the Muslim community tonight for showing up in the rain. We were able to pull more people from the community than the White House was to stand in solidarity to demand an immediate cease fire.
Medea Benjamin: The message is the same as it is every day. Stop the complicity with Israel. Stop sending weapons. The blood of the people of Gaza’s on your hands.
Robert Mccaw: It would be an abuse of what Ramadan means for Muslims to allow the White House to whitewash itself, to seek absolution of its complicity in this genocide.
Medea Benjamin: Last year, they had about 350 people. The fact that they can’t get people from the Muslim community to go to the White House, I mean, that is quite extraordinary. I think that says a lot.
