PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY REQUEST FORMAL STATUS AT UNITED NATIONS
April 3, 2024The Palestinian Authority yesterday reignited its 2011 application for FULL membership of the United Nations!
In a letter on Tuesday to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Palestinian UN envoy, Riyad Mansour, requested “upon instructions of the Palestinian leadership” that an application dating back to 2011 be reconsidered.
In 2011, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas delivered the Palestinian Authority’s application to become the 194th member of the United Nations to then Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sept. 23, but that bid failed because they did not secure the required support of nine out of the 15 members of the United Nations Security Council.
The PA followed up a year later by going to the 193-member General Assembly, where there are no vetoes, and by more than a two-thirds majority succeeded in having their status raised from a “U.N. observer” to a “non-member observer STATE” in November 2012.
If this new bid succeeds it would effectively mean that Palestine would be recognised as an independent, sovereign state at the United Nations with full privileges.
The renewed application was transmitted to the Security Council, and the Palestinians have asked that it be reviewed this month.
The supporters’ letter to the council president included the names of 140 countries that have recognized a Palestinian state, including members of the 22-nation Arab Group at the United Nations, the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the 120-member Nonaligned Movement.
“It was the international community that decided to create two states in Palestine since 1947,” Mansour said in February.
“It is the duty of the international community along with the Palestinian people to complete that exercise by admitting the state of Palestine to membership.”
Last month, he said the Palestinians would “start mobilizing the largest number of countries to support us” and expressed hope that the council would act in April, pointing to a council meeting set for April 18 on the situation in Gaza.
