IDF HOSTAGE CHIEF VOICES HOPELESSNESS IN NEGOTIATIONS WITH ISRAELI GOVERNMENT
May 29, 2024The head of the Missing and Captive Soldiers Division in the IDF, Maj. Gen. (res.) Nitzan Alon, reportedly told the liaison officers of the families of abducted soldiers’ that he is frustrated with the current situation and believes that « with this government lineup, there won’t be a deal » – according to a report by Channel 12 News.
According to the report, Alon told officers that he spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and clarified to him that it would be possible to return to fighting at any moment after the deal is approved.
« The deal I am pushing for will include the return of all hostages, while Hamas insists that it will include the end of the war, » Alon clarified to the officers, according to the report. The IDF responded that « the remarks were taken out of context. »
A statement on behalf of Netanyahu said that « the clashes from within the negotiating team only strengthen Hamas’s position, harm the families, and distance the release of our hostages … while Prime Minister Netanyahu has repeatedly given the negotiating team a broad mandate for the release of our hostages, [Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya] Sinwar continues to demand the end of the war, the withdrawal of the IDF from the Gaza Strip, and leaving Hamas intact, so he can perpetrate the horrors of October 7 again and again. Prime Minister Netanyahu opposes this vigorously. »
