IF YOU DON’T WANT HAMAS, GIVE THE PALESTINIANS THEIR RIGHTS!
June 2, 2024Maher Mughrabi, an editor and writer on International affairs, was asked about Hamas being rewarded for their attack on Israel with the global recognition they’re receiving.
“But I have to say I don’t hear anybody who’s willing to stand up and fight for the Palestinians… If you leave a vacuum where you’re not fighting for the Palestinians, yes, Hamas are going to fill that vacuum every single day of the week.”
Brilliant response! Israel has occupied Gaza since 1967 and had since established settlements across the Strip. Despite their supposed “exit” in September 2005 and the dismantlement of Israeli settlements, the state still controlled the Strip by way of entry, exit, imports and exports.
Article 42 of the Hague Regulations and precedent in international law maintain that territory remains occupied so long as it is placed under the authority of the hostile army. With Israel controlling the Gazan borders, airspace, water and electricity access in addition to maintaining a military presence through technology, they have, in effect, OCCUPIED GAZA even after their “withdrawal”.
With this cruel occupation, the ONLY force that defended the Palestinians was HAMAS and other military factions. The world did NOT defend the Gazans. They were ABANDONED! Do we expect to sit back and watch a people be occupied SILENTLY?! And when they express any sense of resistance, we shut them up because their suffering annoys us?!
The Gazan resistance will NOT cede until the occupation cedes! It’s simple.

Reporter: Hamas in some ways through all of this discussion we’re having, is being rewarded, is it not, for changing the discourse?
Maher Mughrabi: In what way is it being rewarded?
Reporter: That’s the argument that they are getting, all of their issues debated.
Maher Mughrabi: But they’re not their issues. They don’t belong to Hamas. They belong to the whole Palestinian people. The Hamas, Hamas are the ones who are willing to fight and willing to attack and willing to kill people to make their point. But what I would say is, and this is, I mean this most sincerely, I hear people here say all lives matter. And I hear people say that they cringe and they recoil when they see the violence of the Israeli state in Gaza. But I have to say, I don’t hear anybody who’s willing to stand up and fight for the Palestinians. I don’t hear anybody who’s willing to put their political or their economic credentials on the line to save Palestinian lives. If you leave a vacuum where you’re not fighting for the Palestinians, yes, Hamas are going to fill that vacuum every single day of the week. And that’s the tragedy. The tragedy is that you have left the field as an international community to Hamas. If you don’t want Hamas in the center of the field, take the center of the field. Fight for the Palestinians
Reporter: A powerfully expressed point
