THIS IS WHY UNIVERSITY ENCAMPMENTS MUST SUCCEED!
June 23, 2024If you thought student encampments would not directly impact Israel, think again.
Amid institutional considerations of divestment and boycott that would stop the flow of capital from American universities to the Israeli economy, concerns were raised about the serious consequences that would affect the Israeli technological sector, which develops the occupation’s arms industry.
Students have been protesting against the genocide in Gaza, and despite police assaults and arrests, among other means to crush their movement, their voices have been loud and clear, making their efforts to end the genocide tangible.

English Script:
Tala Alayli: What would happen if American universities stopped investing in Israel? And Israeli analysts said the consequences of university divestment would be catastrophic on the Israeli economy, specifically on the technological sector. But let’s backtrack. Top American universities such as Harvard, Brown, Johns Hopkins and the University of Minnesota have been pumping billions of dollars into the Israeli economy, making up to 2 to 3% of foreign capital flows into its technological sector. But after the occupation launched its onslaught in Gaza, University students across the United States have decided that the money they’re paying for their tuitions should no longer fund “Israel’s child killing genocide”. So student encampments, protests and police assaults have prompted university administrators to begin considering the protesters rightful demands of divestment and boycotts. Special committees have been formed and votes are being cast to decide whether the educational institutions should obstruct investments into the Israeli corporations. To nobody’s surprise. Professors and economists have already begun anticipating lawsuits against divestment decisions. I mean, talk about biting the hand that fed you, in true Israeli fashion. According to the founder of Israeli venture capital Giza Fund, divestment decisions by university could severely impact the market because and I quote “the universities do not only represent large investment entities, but claim to be a moral compass, a decision against Israel that is published could cause heavy damage. But this further indicates just how severe the impact of university divestment would be on Israeli technology, which would first and foremost begin disintegrating the defense industry, fueling the genocide in Gaza. If these universities decide to stick to their “moral compass”, then cash flows into Israel would be stopped. In all cases, this signifies another historic achievement and marker in international solidarity with the people of Palestine and a huge loss for the Israeli occupation.
