Ali goes on to highlight that the only opposition within the British cabinet to the Balfour Declaration came from Edwin Montagu, the only Jewish member, who viewed the policy as a scheme to relocate European Jews.

Tariq Ali: Under the Ottoman Empire, the Arab world used to be one world. It was a world of cities. So you could go to school in Amman in Jordan. You could go to another school in Jerusalem and you could graduate in Cairo. Lots of kids did that. One world. they were not different countries. And that was probably in some ways, the sort of best phase of the Arab world. The Western empires came in and divided that world, making little countries. And when the Balfour Declaration, came into being, when they wanted to create a new colony consisting mainly of Jewish people, the only member in the cabinet who attacked this Balfour Declaration was Montagu, a Jewish member of the cabinet. And he said, why are you doing this? You want to drive the Jews out of Europe? The other people who were strongly in favor of the Balfour Declaration or something resembling it, were the Nazis in Germany, they said, yeah let’s give them their own place. You know, it was that sort of an attitude.
