AMERICA VOWS TO STAND BY ISRAEL DESPITE VIOLATIONS
July 31, 2024US Secretary of Defense, LLoydAustin, affirmed that his country will defend Israel if it is attacked, in connection with the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran.
Austin reiterated that he “does not believe a war in the Middle East is inevitable,” during his tour in the Philippines this morning.
“What you heard me say yesterday is that if Israel is attacked, we certainly will help defend Israel. You saw us do that in April, you can expect to see us do that again.”

Reporter: Can you confirm if Israel is behind the strike that killed the senior Hamas leader in Tehran? And did you get any warning that this was going to happen?
Lloyd Austin: I don’t have anything for you on that. We certainly have heard the reporting, but I don’t have any additional information to provide. What you heard me say yesterday is that if Israel is attacked, we certainly will help defend Israel. You saw us do that in April, you can expect to see us do that again. But we don’t want to see any of that happen. We’re going to work hard to make sure that, you know, we’re doing things to help take the temperature down and address issues through diplomatic means.
