ISRAEL FACING WAR ON FIVE FRONTS
August 6, 2024David Hearst, the editor-in-chief of Middle East Eye, discusses the extent to which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has advanced in creating the conditions for a regional war involving the US, Israel, Iran and the resistance movements.
Hearst reflects on Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s speech at the funeral of his deputy, Fuad Shukr, following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. He notes the significant change in tone after Nasrallah declared that the conflict has entered a new phase due to these assassinations, warning that Israel faces the prospect of war on five simultaneous fronts.
Hearst argues that US President Joe Biden has lost control over Netanyahu and has even less ability to prevent or mitigate a regional conflict. He asserts that Netanyahu is dragging the region into a war that Israel cannot halt or win.
**The conclusion of this reveals that whilst America “appears” to be trying to control Netanyahu and his mob, in reality the Americans stand to gain substantially from a regional and global conflict because the biggest industry in the US is the weapons manufacturing industry. They want to sell more weapons, make more money, and then win the contracts to go into the those countries and “rebuild” them. It is a cycle-economy that keeps America and its allies guaranteed billions and billions of dollars.
There is no consideration of humanity in this equation.
It is up to us to hold them accountable and hold high our values. We must not let them lead us down the dark and souless path of profit.

David Hearst: You can actually measure how far down the road Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has traveled in creating the conditions for a regional war. In the speeches of Hassan Nasrallah. Ten months ago, the leader of Hezbollah took a full month to react to Hamas’s attack on October the 7th. And even then, he was too circumspect for Hamas’s comfort. Nasrallah said. Hamas’s operation was “100% Palestinian in operation and execution”, and had “no bearing on any decision or move to be taken by any other faction within the resistance axis”.Since then, more than three dozen senior Hezbollah commanders and some 400 fighters have been killed, largely from two units, its southern front and the Radwan unit, Hezbollah’s special forces. But this week, Nasrallah’s tone changed markedly. Speaking at the funeral of his deputy, Fouad Shukr, and after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, in a bomb in Tehran, Nasrallah said “To the Israeli army, laugh a little now, but you will cry a lot because you don’t know what red lines you have crossed”. Israel, he said, will not know where Iran’s attack will come from. “We’ve moved beyond just a support front. This is an open battle on all fronts, a new phase”, the new phase he’s talking about is a war on five fronts. From the Houthis in the south, Hamas in the east, Hezbollah in the north, Iran and Jordan in the east. Nasrallah is not bluffing, and America knows it. Joe Biden has lost control of Netanyahu and has even less control over preventing or mitigating a regional war.
