Ahmed Shihab-Eldin Detained in Kuwait as Press Freedom Concerns Mount
April 19, 2026
Kuwaiti-American journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has been detained in Kuwait since early March, raising growing concerns over press freedom in the region.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists and human rights groups, Shihab-Eldin was arrested around March 2–3 while visiting family and is facing charges including “spreading false information,” “harming national security,” and “misusing a mobile phone”—broad accusations critics say are often used to restrict independent journalism.
His detention reportedly followed social media posts in which he shared publicly available and verified footage related to the Iran war, including images of a U.S. fighter jet incident in Kuwait.
Authorities have released limited information about the case, which rights groups say reflects a wider crackdown on press freedom in the Gulf amid escalating regional tensions.
Shihab-Eldin is an award-winning journalist who has worked with major international outlets including PBS, Al Jazeera English, and The New York Times, and is widely known for his coverage of Middle East issues.
