In this exclusive interview, Ione doesn’t mince words. She warns that the genocide in Palestine is the blueprint for a Global War, one where the United States and Israel believe they can rule by force, aggression, and total impunity.
Ione speaks on why Spain refuses to turn its back on Palestine, remembering when the world turned its back on Spain during its own fight against fascism.

Ione credits the Global Sumud Flotilla and mass social pressure, not politicians, for forcing the hands of Trump and Netanyahu.

Daizy: First of all, you are a hero for us, for so many people around the world. From the minute this started, you have been carrying the flame. And we around the world, we are very proud of you. Ione Bellara: Thank you very much. But we are doing what we have to do. We are doing what we had to do because I don’t want my sons and daughters to live in a world where children are exterminated and nobody does anything. Spain was a country that, when fascism ran rampant, the entire international community turned its back on. We do not forget that in the most difficult moment, other countries turned their backs on us when Spain was fighting against fascism. Therefore, we are not going to abandon the people of Palestine, and my gratitude is eternal to a people who resist and teach us what it means to resist against those who want evil to reign in the world.
Daizy: Wonderful. Spain has been also outstanding and the most progressive and outspoken country in the world. We’ve seen Lulu in Brazil. We’ve seen the president of Colombia, and we’ve seen some words from Mark Carney in Canada, but no one has been more vocal than Spain. Pedro Sanchez, your government, the actions that you’re taking, you’re closing off the airspace to American planes participating in the war. There’s so much that you’re leading on. Does it give you hope? Do you see other countries learning and following and being brave like Spain? Or still it’s too small.
Ione Bellara: Unfortunately, international complicity with the genocidaires, with Netanyahu and with Trump, has been total. I believe that this will be changed by organized people, through actions like the Global Sumud Flotilla, the general strike in Italy, and the Vuelta Ciclista a España that people organized here in Spain. And I believe that this will be stopped by people organizing, not governments. We have said it many times: first they did it to the people of Palestine, but now they are going to do it to anyone, as we see with Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba. It is a world war. It is a world war with different focuses that has a common denominator: the United States. We need to stop the United States; it is losing its hegemony and is like a wounded animal that will devastate the world to avoid losing its power, and we cannot allow it.
Daizy: This war with Iran and what you’re talking about, the global domination hegemony, the biggest feat for a lot of people is if if America and Israel win, that is going to be the norm for the rest of the world. That is going to be domination by force, by violence, by aggression, and by whatever they determine is according to their ideology. And this is why isn’t the rest of the world and world leaders seeing what we are seeing, that if they win, we all lose, even them.
Ione Bellara: That is a very good question. But I think this situation does not come from nowhere. It comes from the Iraq war and the total impunity the United States has had for its war crimes throughout history. Because there was no justice, they now think they can continue with this neocolonial policy of resource appropriation. They think the world is theirs, but decent and working people must organize to show them it is not. We are going to defend a society and a world where our daughters can live and if they want war, let them go themselves; let Trump go, let Trump’s son go. I don’t want my children to go to war, and I don’t want them to see other children murdered for money and Netanyahu’s expansionist ambition. We must organize, move, and give full support and visibility to the Global Sumud Flotilla. If Netanyahu and Trump were forced to sign that false peace plan, it was because people organized and mobilized worldwide. We will work to end the genocide and apartheid.
Daizy: One last question. The global flotilla. How important is what they’re doing with the flotilla? Again, trying to break the siege. And you are here today. Why should the rest of the world pay attention to the global flotilla?
Ione Bellara: As I was saying, because in the autumn it was the Global Sumut flotilla, the general strike in Italy, and the Vuelta a España in Spain that led to international pressure forcing Netanyahu and Trump to do something they did not want to do, which was to slow down the pace of the genocide. The genocide continues in Lebanon, in the Gaza Strip, and in the West Bank, with the approval of the new death penalty law applied only to Palestinians and to detainees, to Palestinian prisoners. But they have had to change the plan they had because of social pressure. That is why we must rebuild that social pressure so that the genocide ends, so that apartheid ends, and so that Palestine is free from the river to the sea.
