Yesterday, in the middle of a campaign rally in Andalusia, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez finally said what every person with a conscience has been screaming for months. He looked at the wreckage of international law and declared: “”Governments that violate international law cannot be partners.”” It’s that simple.
But the real fire started today in Luxembourg. Spain, along with Ireland and Slovenia, formally moved to terminate the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
For years, the EU has hidden behind Article 2 of this agreement, which says respect for human rights is an essential element while continuing to be Israel’s top trade partner.
Sánchez’s move is a start, but the credibility of the entire European Union is in the gutter.
