In a massive blow to the Trump administration’s attempt to silence international critics, a federal judge has stepped in to protect UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon issued a temporary injunction, ruling that the aggressive sanctions imposed against Albanese likely violated her First Amendment rights.
The judge’s message was blunt: “Protecting the freedom of speech is ‘always’ in the public interest”.
Imposed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in July 2025, the sanctions effectively debanked Albanese, making it nearly impossible for her to meet basic daily needs or support her U.S. citizen daughter.
Albanese celebrated the win on social media, thanking her family for “stepping up to defend me” and calling the ruling a victory for accountability.
