French Flotilla Activist Reveals Shocking Sexual Assault Ordeal Involving Israeli Soldiers During Gaza Mission
May 28, 2026
PARIS & ROME — Returning volunteers from the intercepted Global Sumud Flotilla have come forward with harrowing testimonies of severe physical and sexual violence endured while held in Israeli detention facilities.
Among those speaking out is French activist Meriem Hadjal, who recounted her traumatic ordeal upon arriving back in Paris. Hadjal stated she was subjected to targeted sexual violence, groping, and physical beatings, including having her hair pulled and being repeatedly kicked in the ribs by forces. Her account mirrors a growing wave of complaints from over 430 international activists—representing countries including France, Italy, Germany, and Australia—who were detained when their aid vessels were intercepted by the Israeli Navy in international waters.
Organizers have documented at least 15 distinct cases of severe sexual assault, including rape, alongside dozens of severe injuries such as fractured vertebrae and broken ribs. The severe accounts have sparked global condemnation and triggered formal criminal investigations by prosecutors in Rome. In response, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israeli Prison Service have issued total denials, dismissing the allegations as entirely false and labeling the humanitarian mission a political stunt.
