June 1, 2026Thousands of miles from Gaza and the occupied West Bank, individuals from the United States, Europe and other parts of the world have chosen to travel abroad and serve in the Israeli military.
Andrey X asks a question many are afraid to ask:
If foreign fighters joined almost any other military accused of widespread human rights abuses, would they be celebrated, ignored or condemned?
For nearly two years, the world has watched entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble, families buried beneath collapsed buildings, hospitals attacked, journalists killed and civilians displaced on a massive scale.
Yet foreign recruitment into the Israeli military continues.
Not everyone carrying a weapon in Gaza was born there.
Not everyone participating in military operations is Israeli.
Many made a choice.
A conscious decision to travel across the world and join a military campaign that has sparked international outrage and allegations of war crimes from human rights organizations, legal experts and UN officials.
Andrey X argues that history will remember not only the politicians who enabled these wars, but also those who voluntarily chose to take part in them.
The question is simple:
When future generations look back at this moment, what side of history will they see these foreign recruits standing on?
