UK Accused of Free Speech Crackdown After Blocking Pro-Palestine Podcasters Hasan Piker & Cenk Uygur
June 3, 2026
Free speech for some.
Silence for others.
That is the question being asked after political commentators Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker were reportedly blocked from entering the United Kingdom ahead of scheduled appearances at the Oxford Union and SXSW London.
Both have been outspoken critics of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Now, supporters are asking whether criticism of a foreign government is becoming grounds for exclusion from public debate.
The events had been publicly announced for months, tickets had been sold, and preparations were already underway before the decision was made.
Even the President of the Oxford Union pushed back, declaring:
“We will not allow this event to be shut down.”
Whether you agree with Uygur and Piker or not is beside the point.
Free speech only matters when it protects views that are controversial, unpopular or critical of those in power.
If speakers can be prevented from entering a country because of their political opinions, then the debate is no longer about security.
It is about who gets to speak and who gets silenced.
The public should decide whether ideas are persuasive.
Not governments.
Not politicians.
And certainly not political pressure.
