An activist interrupted Marco Rubio’s congressional testimony over U.S. sanctions on Cuba as calls grow to ease economic pressure on the island.

“Pope Leo says: Let Cuba live.”
Those were the words shouted by a religious activist as he disrupted U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s testimony before Congress, condemning decades of U.S. sanctions on Cuba and challenging Washington’s role in conflicts and crises far beyond the island.
The protester accused the United States of pursuing policies that have brought suffering not only to Cuba, but also to people in Palestine, Lebanon and Iran through sanctions, military support, intervention and geopolitical pressure.
For more than sixty years, Cuba has lived under one of the longest sanctions regimes in modern history.
Supporters of the sanctions argue they are aimed at governments.
Families struggling to access medicine.
Communities facing economic hardship.
Entire populations paying the price for political decisions made thousands of miles away.
Inside Congress, the activist’s message connected Cuba to a broader anger felt across the world over U.S. foreign policy.
And for many watching, the question extends beyond Cuba.
How many more people in Palestine, Lebanon, Iran and elsewhere will continue paying the price for policies they never chose?
