Assata Shakur Quote on Freedom Goes Viral Amid Global Palestine Debate

These words could have been written for Gaza City today. Statements, vigils, hashtags, open letters, appeal after appeal made to the conscience of power, and still the siege continues, still the rubble rises.
Assata Shakur, a victim of U.S. racism from an all-white jury conviction and political targeting in the early 90s shares this statement that is worth printing in a marble. Her story is one of defiance to a system that is built to break her.
Shakur, the Black Panther Party leader, author, and activist wasn’t speaking in the abstract. She was naming a pattern as old as oppression itself: those in power rarely surrender it because they’re asked nicely.
“Oppression does not end because the oppressed ask politely. It ends when people organise, resist and refuse to accept their own domination.”
Liberation has never been a gift; it has to be won, demanded and adversed to silence.
Gaza City doesn’t need the world’s pity. It needs the world to stop mistaking awareness for action.
