Palestine Ambassador Accuses Israel of Exploiting Holocaust History to Deflect Criticism
June 27, 2026
Majed Bamya, Deputy Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the UN, said it plainly: nothing justifies atrocities against Palestinians.
Against children.
Against anyone.
He went further, accusing Israel of leaning on the memory of the Holocaust not to honor it, but to wave away scrutiny of what’s happening in Gaza right now.
Why does that matter?
Because grief shouldn’t be a shield. And because invoking historical trauma to silence present-day accountability does a disservice to both histories, the one being honored and the one being ignored.
Using one atrocity to excuse silence about another should alarm anyone who claims to care about human rights, memory, and the meaning of “never again.”
Today it’s a UN ambassador raising the question. Tomorrow it could be anyone who tries to document what’s happening on the ground.
A special respect to Majed Bamya, who keeps naming what many in the room would rather not hear.
When grief gets weaponized to silence the living, the dead are not who’s being honored.
And that tells you everything you need to know.

Majed Bamya: And then those denouncing the crimes are accused of anti-Semitism. How dare Israeli representative drag millions of Jews, including those denouncing these crimes, to shield perpetrators? How dare they invoke the memory of 6 million victims of the Holocaust to defend atrocities? Isn’t the lesson of the Holocaust that nothing justifies the commission of atrocities? Isn’t the lesson of the Holocaust that you cannot use dehumanization that sets the stage for such atrocities? They explained that if the actions are committed by Palestinians, they are barbaric. But if they are committed by Israeli soldiers or settlers, they are indispensable or defendable. That if the victims are Israelis, they are atrocities that justify imposing hell on millions of Palestinians. But if the victims are Palestinians, no Israeli can be held accountable. We cannot live in such a world. Nothing justifies atrocities by anyone, under any circumstances, regardless of the identity of the perpetrators and the identity of the victims. Nothing justifies attacks against civilians, whether Palestinian or Israeli. Nothing justifies attacking civilians. Nothing justifies atrocities against children. It seems so basic to say it. And yet nobody is willing to hold accountable those who have committed these crimes, and they are trying to be the ones accusing those denouncing them instead of responding to the accusations and the evidence that is overwhelming.
