Israeli Settlers Eye South Lebanon, Warns Former Lebanese Ambassador Tracy Chamoun
July 1, 2026
Israel has enlisted private demolition contractors, some with experience in Gaza, who are paid by the number of buildings they demolish. Satellite imagery shows that one third of South Lebanon’s villages are now either occupied, threatened, evacuated or demolished.
But what is happening on the ground goes even further than demolition. An Israeli settler movement called Uri Tzafon, Hebrew for “Awaken, North Wind”, has been running property advertisements offering plots of Lebanese land for sale at around $80,000, with luxury apartments described as offering “a view of snowy mountains and a warm community in the land of our ancestors.”
Their website has published a map of South Lebanon with Lebanese towns and villages south of the Litani River rebranded with Hebrew names. Members of the group have physically crossed into South Lebanon to plant trees and set up tents, declaring it their land.
In the latest episode of Reel Talk, I asked former Lebanese Ambassador Tracy Chamoun to explain what this movement represents and where it is heading. Her answer connects the demolitions in the South directly to a decades-long strategy of annexation and names the Israeli politicians backing it.
