Who Is Destabilizing Syria Analysis of Deadly Explosions in Suwayda Province
July 12, 2026
A second deadly explosion in Damascus in less than a week has exposed the fraught security vacuum that persists in Syria.
On Tuesday, twin improvised explosive devices (IEDs) detonated in the heart of the capital’s diplomatic sector, right between the Ministry of Tourism and the Four Seasons Hotel—where a French delegation was staying. The high-stakes security breach left one dead and dozens injured, highlighting the volatile reality on the ground.
The timing carried massive geopolitical weight: the bombs went off during a historic state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron, the first major Western head of state to visit since the fall of the Assad regime.
Despite the explosions, Macron and Syria’s interim president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, pushed forward with their meeting at the People’s Palace, officially announcing the formal restoration of full diplomatic ties between Paris and Damascus. While Syria’s Interior Ministry has since dismantled the Islamic State-linked cell responsible for the attack, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the immense security hurdles the transitional government faces as it tries to project stability and court global reconstruction aid.
