A guest speaker invited to address a Georgia state university was handed a contract mandating she sign an oath pledging not to participate in boycotts against Israel.
When she refused to pledge allegiance to a foreign government, her contract was canceled, her event shut down, and her right to free speech conditioned on foreign policy compliance.
Political expression should not come with a financial penalty. Others maintain that states have the right to choose whom they contract with.

I don’t have allegiance to Israel. So I have a friend who got hired to give a speech at Georgia State University. No big deal. And she goes, they send her in advance the contract. You know, I’m going to give you $500 to do the speech, and you have to pledge allegiance to Israel. She’s like, what the heck. What are you talking about? I have to pledge allegiance. I’m not going to pledge allegiance to Israel. I don’t have allegiance to Israel. Well, you can’t be a contractor in the state of Georgia. And giving the speech and taking state money would make her a contractor unless you pledge fealty to Israel. And she said no. And they canceled her speech. So she sued and she lost. She lost in the Supreme Court of Georgia. And it’s not good at all. I just learned this week that in addition to the billions of dollars that we give to Israel in American taxpayers money, the states all give money to Israel as well. It’s a line item in the budgets of all 50 states.
