Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Calls on EU to Stop Israel From Turning Lebanon Into Gaza,Spain responds to Israel as Pedro Sanchez urges EU to prevent Lebanon from becoming another Gaza
July 22, 2026
“WE ARE NOT DEFAMING YOU, ISRAEL, WE ARE DESCRIBING YOU.”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has issued a stark warning to the European Union, calling for immediate, decisive action to stop Israel from turning Lebanon into another Gaza.
Delivering one of the most direct rebukes from a Western head of state to date, Sánchez held nothing back:
“We are not defaming you, Israel, we are describing you: You are a genocidal and criminal regime.”
“You will all be held accountable before the International Criminal Court.”
Sánchez urged European leadership to move beyond words, demand an immediate end to military aggression, and enforce international law before the destruction seen in Gaza is fully replicated in Lebanon.
As Western consensus fractures, the line between diplomatic silence and legal accountability is becoming impossible to ignore.
Respect for international law must apply equally to all, without exception.

Pedro Sanchez: A Europe that asserts itself in the defence of international law and a global order based on rules. We cannot simply remain with lamentation and frustration. In short, just look at Gaza to see what the consequences are of this violation of international law. That is why, from Europe, we must also be clear, because there are many countries in the so-called Global South that are looking at Europe, and what they want is for us not to fall into this double standard, this double measure depending on the case, whether it affects Europe more or less. Let us not allow another, Gaza in Lebanon, because in the face of flagrant violations of international humanitarian law, Europe must act consistently if we also want the rest of the world to look at us and support us in the backing we are giving to Ukraine in its fight for freedom against the invader, in this case Putin’s Russia. And that is why yesterday the government of Spain and I myself, proposed that for the sake of consistency and also empathy. What the European Union must do is suspend its association agreement with Israel because it is evident that it is trampling on and violating many of the articles of that association agreement, especially those linked to respect for international law.
