DISARMAMENT IS ACHIEVABLE, BUT ONLY IF WE ARE HONEST.” 🇱🇧
Addressing the national and international debate over Hezbollah’s arsenal, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun laid out what realistic disarmament actually looks like—drawing direct parallels to historical precedents like Northern Ireland (IRA) and Colombia (FARC).
Core points raised:
Disarming Hezbollah is not about fighting a foreign mercenary force; it involves Lebanese citizens shaped over 40 years of ideological, social, and military infrastructure.
True resolution requires a formal strategy of Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR)—starting with addressing the root cause: ending the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory.
The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) must be granted sole, exclusive operational control to defend the nation, requiring immediate and unconditional international support.
All economic recovery and rebuilding efforts must flow strictly through official Lebanese state channels.
Lebanon deserves one flag, one army, and one sovereign state.
Peace cannot be imposed. It must be built.
President Aoun isn’t defending armed groups. He’s defending the only path that has ever worked: replacing militias with a strong, sovereign Lebanese state.

President Aoun: Let me address directly the question I know is on everyone’s mind tonight. Is the disarmament of Hezbollah realistically achievable? It is, but only if we are honest about what it actually requires. The armed groups we are speaking of is not a foreign mercenaries force. It is composed of Lebanese citizens who over 40 years were shaped by an enormous sustained investment, ideological, social and military into non-state armed groups operating outside the government control. That reality does not make the goal less urgent. It makes the method more important. History offers a proven path, from the FARC in Colombia to the IRA in Northern Ireland, and it is not a mystery: Disarmament, demobilization and reintegration. It begins by removing the root cause that Hezbollah has long been cited as its justification, the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory. It continues as the Lebanese Armed Forces assume full, exclusive operational control, which requires immediate unconditional support for our military, the sole legitimate defender of this country. And it concludes through reintegration, a reconstruction program run through the Lebanese state alone
