Avi Shlaim: Netanyahu is obsessed with Iran, and for the last 30 years, he has been advocating a joint American-Israeli strike against Iran. No American president until Trump was stupid enough to go along with this mad scheme. But Netanyahu persuaded Trump in his first term to go back on the Obama nuclear deal, a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, which was a very good deal which protected Israeli security. But Netanyahu prevailed on Trump in his first term to not just withdraw from the deal, but to go all out to destroy it. And he succeeded. And now, in his second term, Netanyahu persuaded Trump to attack Iran, and he gave him false information. He said to him, the Iranian regime is on its last legs, one knock and it would collapse like a house of cards. And you will be the victor in this war. And we have seen what happened. And one of the consequences for America is that Iran attacked American bases in the Gulf and in Jordan and attacked Gulf infrastructure. So the Gulf states are now asking themselves, what’s the point of having America as an ally? With friends like that, who needs an enemy? So this is undermining the whole alliance structure for America.
