David Pocock Introduces ‘Red Lines’ Bills to Limit Australia’s Role in War Crimes and Genocide

AUSTRALIA IS TRYING TO CLOSE THE LOOPHOLE THAT LETS IT PROFIT FROM GENOCIDE.
Senator David Pocock, alongside Dr. Sophie Scamps and a cross-party coalition, just introduced the Red Lines Package, four bills designed to do something Australia’s government has refused to do for three years: put actual legal limits on funding, arming, or investing in genocide, war crimes, and illegal occupation.
Right now, there’s nothing stopping Australian weapons, superannuation funds, or trade dollars from flowing straight into illegal settlements or a military committing war crimes. This bill closes that gap — banning defence exports where there’s a real risk of enabling atrocities, forcing divestment from illegal settlement activity, and creating Australia’s first Anti-Genocide Commissioner.
Pocock said it plainly: of everything constituents contact him about, the genocide in Gaza is the single biggest issue, by far. Thousands of emails. Years of “there’s nothing we can do.” This is the answer to that excuse.
While the UK, France, and Canada move to cut trade with illegal settlements, Australia has a choice: keep hiding behind ministerial discretion, or finally put the law where its words have been.
