Palestinian-American Lawyer Noura Erakat Arrested at Florida Hearing Over $1 Billion Israel Bond Investment
September 18, 2026
A PALESTINIAN LAW PROFESSOR GOT HANDCUFFED FOR SPEAKING AT A PUBLIC BUDGET HEARING.
Noura Erakat — Rutgers professor, Berkeley-trained human rights attorney, someone who has addressed the United Nations directly — went to a Palm Beach County commission meeting to do exactly what public hearings exist for: speak against her government’s decisions. Palm Beach County holds $1 billion in Israel Bonds. She said so out loud.
She was detained in an elevator. Held in jail overnight. Charged with trespassing for speaking at a public meeting she had every right to attend.
She wasn’t alone. Over 100 residents showed up with signs reading “Fund Transit, Not Genocide” and “Fund Housing, Not Genocide.” Dozens were forcibly removed by police. One commissioner told a protesting military veteran he was “an embarrassment”to his uniform — for opposing sending a billion taxpayer dollars overseas.
Her own words after release: “The whole scenario was absurd and a glimpse into how protecting Israel requires the sabotage of democratic norms.”
When speaking at a budget hearing gets you arrested, ask who the meeting was actually designed to protect.
