1916: Two European diplomats draw the modern Middle East with a ruler, carving up tribes and communities for oil, in secret, without asking a single person who lived there.
From there, the pattern never stopped. The West armed Saddam Hussein through the Iran-Iraq War — including chemical weapons materials — then looked away during the Anfal genocide against the Kurds. It backed the mujahideen against the Soviets, including bin Laden, then invaded Iraq in 2003 on WMD claims that turned out to be false, disbanding the army and turning a functioning state into a power vacuum. That vacuum birthed al-Qaeda in Iraq, which became ISIS. The bombing campaigns that followed hit seven Muslim-majority countries — hospitals, schools, water systems, gone.
Then came Gaza: 2 million people trapped, bombed, starved, while ceasefire after ceasefire got vetoed.
So when people flee homelands that were destabilized, invaded, or flattened by Western policy and show up asking for safety, they get called illegal, dangerous, a burden. We authored the crisis. Then we built the hostility toward the people running from it.
