Juma Xipaia is chief of the Xipaya people in Brazil’s Middle Xingu. She’s confronted illegal gold miners, land-grabbers, and multinational corporations coming for her ancestral land — and survived six attempts on her life for it. Her husband Hugo runs raids on illegal mining camps deep in the forest, under armed threat, for the same fight.
And through all of it — she’s preparing to bring a child into the world.
“Are those who have ‘lived for centuries inside concrete boxes even capable of feeling our suffering?’” she asks in the film. “I don’t know if they’re even listening.”
Yanuni was shortlisted for an Oscar. It got passed over by every major streaming platform. So Juma and her team, with Leonardo DiCaprio producing, decided if the industry wouldn’t carry her story to the world, they’d put it on YouTube for free instead. Over a million views in 60 hours.
