His name is Dorsen. He was photographed at 8 years old, cowering under an overseer’s raised hand, digging through rock with his bare hands for less than a dollar a day. Children as young as 4 are still doing this work in the DRC right now, hand-mining cobalt in collapsing tunnels, breathing toxic dust, earning $2 to $10 a day for minerals worth billions on the global market.
That cobalt moves through Chinese trading middlemen, gets refined, and ends up in the batteries powering the phone in your pocket. Apple says it’s improved its standards. The mining hasn’t stopped. The children haven’t stopped.
