Rep. Maxine Waters looked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in the eye and said what a lot of people are afraid to: this policy is cruel, and it doesn’t have to be.
Since May, Bessent’s Treasury has sanctioned Cuba’s state oil company, its fuel distributors, and the equipment needed to keep the island’s energy sector running. The result: prolonged blackouts, drinking water shortages, and UN food aid stuck at the border while people go hungry.
Whatever the full picture of Cuba’s crisis, one thing isn’t in dispute: cutting off a country’s fuel supply doesn’t punish a government. It punishes grandmothers without electricity and children without food.
You don’t have to be cruel to make a point.
