The message on her sign was simple: “Stop the genocide in Gaza. I support Palestine Action.”
On Sunday, 94-year-old Margaret Owen was among those detained at a pro-Palestine protest outside the Labour Party conference in Liverpool. Police say 82 people were arrested and another 79 reported for summons after protesters displayed material supporting Palestine Action, which has been proscribed under the UK Terrorism Act.
Owen’s arrest is especially striking because she is a Jewish human-rights barrister and OBE who has spent decades working on human-rights issues.
And she was not alone.
PENSIONERS. GRANDPARENTS. LAWYERS. ACTIVISTS.
People sat outside a political conference holding signs and demanding an end to the suffering in Gaza — and were arrested.
If speaking against the destruction of Gaza can make a person a terrorism suspect, then Britain needs to seriously confront what its protest laws are being used to silence.
