Iceland’s Foreign Minister Fires Back at Netanyahu After UN Walkout “Moral Cowards” Remark
September 30, 2026
WE HAVE HEARD THE WORDS ‘MORAL COWARDS’ FROM THIS PODIUM.”
When dozens of delegates walked out of Netanyahu’s UN address, he called them moral cowards. Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir took the podium and handed the phrase right back to him: “To me, ‘moral cowards’ are those who ‘refuse to sit down and negotiate just and lasting peace.’
Those ‘leaders who deny access to humanitarian aid for people in desperate need’. Moral cowards are those leaders who repeatedly ‘go against and disrespect international law.’”
She didn’t stop there. She said Palestinian suffering cannot become global “background noise”, pointing to children being killed, families losing their homes, and parents struggling just to keep their kids alive. She called out settler violence in the West Bank, enabled, in her words, by impunity and permissive policy. And she confirmed Iceland has joined eleven other countries restricting trade in illegal settlement goods.
A foreign minister took the exact insult meant to discredit her colleagues and turned it into an indictment of the man who said it.
