Ione Belarra Fights Fergie Chambers Extradition, Calling Him Spain’s First Political Prisoner
October 5, 2026
“THE FIRST POLITICAL PRISONER IN SPANISH HISTORY.”
Fergie Chambers, an American philanthropist who’s given away much of his family fortune to humanitarian projects in Gaza, a bakery, a community kitchen, mobile clinics, reconstructive surgery for wounded children — was arrested by Spanish police in unmarked cars while driving with his partner and son to look at schools in Ibiza.
He’s been held without bail since July, under a sealed U.S. extradition request.
Ione Belarra, Spain’s Secretary-General of Podemos, didn’t mince words: “Fergie Chambers is the first political prisoner in Spanish history being imprisoned because of his support for Palestine.” His own lawyer, Baltasar Garzón — the same judge who once pursued Pinochet — called it a case with “clear signs of political persecution.”
His partner is three months pregnant with their second child. He’s now fighting extradition in Spain’s National Court, with his family, his case, and precedent for the entire European pro-Palestine movement hanging in the balance.
Humanitarian aid isn’t a crime. Solidarity isn’t a crime.
