Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator Goes Viral Again as Viewers Compare It to America Today
October 5, 2026
TURNS OUT SACHA BARON COHEN’S 2012 SATIRE WAS A BLUEPRINT FOR TODAY’S AMERICA.
“You could let 1% of the people have all the money.” A dictator says it as a punchline. Hyper-concentrated wealth. A media that only pretends to be free. A population kept docile through fear and surveillance instead of actual representation.
It was written to be absurd. It doesn’t feel absurd anymore.
Democracy on paper isn’t the same as democracy in practice. When governance stops answering to the people it’s supposed to serve and starts operating on the whims of whoever holds power, the line between satire and documentary disappears.
The scariest part of good satire isn’t that it’s funny. It’s when you stop laughing because it stopped being fiction.
