For people fleeing South Sudan, crossing a border doesn’t end the journey. For many, it’s just the start of years moving from one uncertainty to the next.
James, Ayman, and Sudan were among 19 South Sudanese people rescued by the Ocean Viking in the central Mediterranean this year. Their stories trace a decade of loss, fleeing conflict in South Sudan, only to be caught in the war that broke out in Sudan in 2023.
Displacement on top of displacement. Family lost along the way. Years spent surviving, not living.
And still, somehow, still reaching for something better. Not comfort. Not luxury. Just the freedom to exist somewhere without fear.
Behind every rescue number is a person who has already survived more than most of us will ever have to.
