Students Boycott Classes in Azerbaijan After Schools Block Girls and Teachers Wearing Hijab
October 13, 2026
Via @middleeasteye and @liveupdatesfromsyria : schoolgirls in Azerbaijan are fighting for something that should never have been in question.
“I HAVE THE RIGHT TO AN EDUCATION TOO!”
“I have my hijab on, but they are not letting me study.”
That’s the message from a student in Azerbaijan, where protests erupted on Monday after some schools turned away girls and female teachers wearing the hijab.
In September, the government announced a ban on clothing in schools that it says violates the principle of secularism. It never named the hijab outright. Yet schools are enforcing it that way, through an informal ban that leaves girls with a cruel choice: take off your faith or stay out of the classroom.
Students and their supporters aren’t accepting it. They’re standing up for the right of Muslim girls to learn without giving up who they are.
A government that calls it “secularism” while locking girls out of school isn’t protecting neutrality. It’s punishing Muslim girls for existing in public.
No child should have to pick between their faith and their future.
