Mark Constantine co-founded Lush in 1995 and still runs it. On a BBC podcast late last year, he was asked whether his stance on Gaza would cost him customers. His answer: if you’re against it, you shouldn’t come in.
He didn’t just say it. Three months earlier, Lush shut every UK store, its factory and its website for a full day, with “Stop Starving Gaza” in the windows. It reportedly cost the company around £300,000. Staff were still paid, and Lush used the day to push the UK government to stop selling arms to Israel.
It also relaunched its Watermelon Slice soap, its biggest fundraiser ever, with most proceeds funding medical care in Gaza, including prosthetics.
The rest of the record, per @conscious.spend : a certified living wage for UK staff since 2017, no animal testing, £250,000 a year toward replacing it, and over half of 2025 sales packaging-free. North American workers have accused Lush of fighting their union efforts, so it’s not perfect, but next to most companies its size, it’s one of the better options.
