New York Times: 48 of 60 Lebanese Villages Under Israeli Control Mostly Levelled
October 16, 202648 OUT OF 60 VILLAGES. FLATTENED.
The New York Times found that Israeli forces have largely leveled 48 of the roughly 60 villages and towns in the part of southern Lebanon they occupy.
This wasn’t collateral damage from a battle. The Times found the razing since April was largely carried out through controlled demolitions, one building after another. Many of the villages were emptied after evacuation warnings and their residents have not been allowed back.
And Israel isn’t hiding the intent. In July, Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel had destroyed at least 24 centuries-old Lebanese villages with Shia residents, and described it as punishment for the people who lived there.
Punishment. For whole villages. For homes, schools, roads and a thousand years of memory.
Meanwhile the Times found at least three new Israeli military outposts, with new roads linking them to Israeli territory. Villages with Christian, Druze or Sunni majorities were less damaged, after some got Israeli assurances they wouldn’t be targeted.
Israel says it razed these villages to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure. But when you wipe 48 villages off the map and build outposts in their place, whose security is that? Nobody is going home to a village that no longer exists.
