Guadalajara Residents Demand Clean Water as Police Respond With Water Cannons and Tear Gas
October 19, 2026
THE IRONY: THEY ASKED FOR CLEAN WATER. THEY GOT SPRAYED WITH IT.
In hundreds of neighborhoods across Guadalajara, the taps are running dark and foul-smelling. Residents report rashes and eye irritation. Some of them can’t drink or cook with what comes out of the pipe.
So they took to the streets, demanding clean water. And police answered with a water cannon, aimed at the very people who can’t get a clean glass of it at home.
Read that again. Water for the protest, none for the people.
The water quality got suddenly worse in recent months, but residents have been reporting contamination since at least 2020. Officials say it could take years to build a new system. And some residents accuse state leaders of using the crisis to push through unpopular privatization, so a public emergency becomes a business opportunity.
When a government can find enough water to spray its own citizens but not enough clean water to drink, the problem isn’t a shortage. It’s priorities.
Clean water isn’t a favor. It’s a right.
